MEXICO CITY — Mayo Clinic today announced that Médica Sur passed Mayo's rigorous review process to become the first international member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. As a member, Médica Sur will offer medical services that enable physicians to interact, share and collaborate with Mayo Clinic physicians to continue offering patients the best possible medical treatment in Mexico.
"Like Mayo Clinic, Médica Sur's sole commitment is to their patients, and we look forward to being a part of their efforts to provide care to patients not only in Mexico City, but throughout the region. This is a great fit for the Mayo Clinic Care Network and we are excited that Médica Sur is the first international member," says David Hayes, M.D., medical director, Mayo Clinic Care Network. "Mayo Clinic physicians and researchers have an almost century-old history of collaboration with the Mexican medical community. This agreement with Médica Sur strengthens our bond and reflects our deep commitment to helping to meet the health care needs of patients from Mexico and communities worldwide."
"The connectedness between Médica Sur and Mayo Clinic Care Network coincides with a shared culture by both institutions to provide the best possible care to patients," says Misael Uribe, M.D., executive president and chairman of the board of Médica Sur. "Through this collaboration, patients will benefit from tools that allow their doctors in Mexico to consult with colleagues at Mayo Clinic."
"With this announcement, Médica Sur becomes the first hospital member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network outside of the U.S. This proves our commitment to the well-being of our patients and our support of our health care providers. In this way, we can assure those who require our health care services that they will receive the best care available in the country," adds Ricardo Spínola, CEO of Médica Sur.
"While preventive health efforts such as eating well, exercising and paying attention to our family histories can go a long way to help patients live healthier lives, there are complex cases that require us to work together to ensure the best possible outcome for patients," says Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, M.D., a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic. "Through this agreement we can work even more closely to ensure Médica Sur patients receive the right care at the right place at the right time."
The Mayo Clinic Care Network extends Mayo Clinic's knowledge and expertise to physicians and providers interested in working together in the best interest of their patients. Médica Sur physicians will now be able to connect directly with Mayo Clinic specialists on questions of patient care using an electronic consulting technique called eConsults. Médica Sur physicians also will have access to the latest Mayo-vetted medical information through AskMayoExpert, an online database developed and used by Mayo Clinic physicians. These tools, in addition to health care consulting, will help Médica Sur continue to provide the best care for its patients.
"Mayo's history and bond with Mexico runs deep," says Robert Ferrigni, M.D., medical director of the Mayo Clinic International Office in Arizona. "For years we've collaborated with some of the country's pre-eminent doctors in caring for patients. This is one more way we can work with Mexico's distinguished medical professionals to meet the health care needs of the Mexican people."
Médica Sur is a health care institution formed by units of diagnosis, health care, research, education and social work. Médica Sur gathers a select group of professionals in medicine, nursing, and administration and hospital management who — under the guidance of a strict code of ethics and supported by state-of-the-art technology — have the goal of providing services of medical excellence with compassion.
Médica Sur is a highly specialized center with a group of companies involving three levels of health care: primary care, with a network of branches for basic diagnosis; second-level care at Hospital Médica Sur Lomas; and highly specialized care through Complejo Médico-Universitario (University Medical Complex).
The Mayo Clinic Care Network represents non-ownership relationships. With Mayo Clinic, members of the network share a commitment to improve the quality and delivery of health care. The primary goal of the Mayo Clinic Care Network is to help people gain the benefits of Mayo Clinic knowledge and expertise close to home, ensuring that patients need to travel for care only when necessary. The network, launched in 2011, now has member organizations based in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Puerto Rico in the United States, and now an international member in Mexico.
