It is a refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal, considering age and size, with a body weight less than 85% of the expected weight. In this disease, there is intense fear of gaining weight or becoming obese, even when below normal weight, stop eating certain food groups and / or perform prolonged fasting.

There is an altered perception of body weight or shape, exaggerating its importance in self-evaluation or denial of the dangers of low weight; before the mirror they look themselves overweighed or parts of their body seem disproportionate to them, and is associated with lack of menstruation for at least three cycles (amenorrhea).

a) Restrictive. No binge eating nor purging (induced vomiting, abuse laxatives, diuretics)
b) Binge-Eating/Purging. Regularly engaged in binge eating or purging.


Patients with anorexia nervosa feel weak, depressed, tired, isolated with feelings of loneliness, because they believe that no one understands them, their self-esteem depends on what they eat and what they do not eat, with constant mood swings.

It is a severe food restriction, frequent and prolonged fasting, excuses for not eating, eating rituals (cut into small pieces, play with food on the plate, prepare food for others and refuse to eat), to prepare food very roasted or almost burned, excessive exercise to loseweight, use of laxatives or diuretics, and in general they wear very loose clothing.


Weight loss, dizziness, fainting, cardiac problems, low blood pressure, dehydration, constipation, low body temperature, they are constantly cold. The lack of a balanced diet causes hair loss, their nails become fragile, dry, scaly skin. It causes lanugo, growth of very fine and abundant hair on face, back and arms, it can also cause osteoporosis.

Diagnosis and treatment

The Alimentary Behavior Disorders are complex diseases that trap the patient little by little and the individual gradually becomes lost with great difficulty to recognize what he/she suffers, so treatment must be multi-and interdisciplinary with different specialists to address all impact areas, always supported by the family, which is essential for recovery.
